The Branch was set up on 9 January 1982 and was the first foreign-invested bank branch approved to operate since the People's Republic of China was established. The Branch has introduced Hong Kong's advanced banking products and services to mainland China. In 1987, the Branch pioneered to provide owners of Mainland's properties with mortgage loans, and offshore customers and enterprises with mortgage loans for commodity residence. The Branch was also among the foremost banks to be approved on 8 January 1999 to operate Renminbi business in Shenzhen area. Recently, the Branch was approved to provide its Renminbi Services to the non-foreign-invested enterprises registered in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan provinces and cities opened for RMB business to foreign banks. Nowadays, the Branch is able to operate both Renminbi and foreign currency deposits and loans services. The Branch has become the main correspondence bank with major conglomerates and many foreign-invested enterprises in Shenzhen.
